Who are you and what do you do?
Saguaro Stompers Clog Dance Company. The Saguaro Stompers have been dancing together since February 2011. Our first performance was at Tucson Meet Yourself (October 2011) and we’ve been enthusiastically kicking up our heels together ever since! We do contemporary American clog dancing, which is closely related to tap dance and Irish dance.
Why does it matter?
We are working to share our unique dance style with as many people as possible. Most people hear “clogging” and think we do Dutch dancing in wooden shoes. What we do is completely different, and a uniquely American dance style in the sense that it developed out of many other countries’ dance traditions. It’s also great low impact exercise!
When did you realize performing was what you wanted to do?
Our director has been performing clogging since elementary school. When she moved to Tucson from Southern California, she knew she needed to find some like-minded souls to go out and dance with.
Do you remember what it was like in the beginning?
As a group, we started with a weekly class and steadily progressed in our knowledge and abilities. The original members danced together for eight months before doing their first performance at Tucson Meet Yourself. We’ve steadily added team members since then, including some who were new to clogging and some who already knew how to clog.
What is your dream performance?
Our dream performance would be a variety show that showcased many different acts, coming together to create a fun, uplifting show.
What is the quality you most like in a person (man or woman)?
We admire kindness and reliability. We need as much of those as we can get!
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
So far, our greatest achievement has been to make a name for ourselves to the extent that we get sought out and hired to do shows as opposed to always needing to look for our performance opportunities.
What turns you on creatively, spiritually, or emotionally?
We really love when we get an enthusiastic audience. It’s inspiring!
What sound or noise do you love?
We love the sound of clogging shoes tapping in unison.
If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
Nice clogging, kids.
